What Does Your Rubber Band Color Choice Say About You?
Whenever you do get braces, we place elastic bands called ligatures over each bracket of your braces in order to secure the archwire. You have the option of choosing the color or colors of your choice in the elastics, which are typically changed monthly. These colors can be the same color or different combinations of colors. In fact, if you really wanted to do so, you could place an entire rainbow over your teeth with these elastics!
It is not uncommon to see children and teenagers select certain combinations of colors or just one
color in general. Many of our patients opt for the colors of the school they attend, the colors of their favorite sports team, or colors that reflect relevant holidays or coordinate with their outfits. Others still select one color to match their personality and to make a bold statement. But what do these colors say about them?
If you are having a difficult time selecting the color you want for your elastics (or if you are simply curious!), then check out what your rubber band color selection says about you!
Red – Red is an energetic, passionate color. It tells people that you are ready for action and are not afraid to take charge in your life. It is inspirational and ambitious, just like your personality! Red also covers a lot of different emotions – lighter hues of red can signify love and romance while darker tints of red signify aggression and anger.
Orange – You are an optimist person who loves to socialize! You have high energy and love to keep your communication open. It would not be unusual to see you chatting online with five or so other people and multi-tasking.
Yellow – Selecting yellow shows the world that you are a happy, lively person! You are a bright ray of sunshine in many of your friends’ lives and love to look at the bright side of life!
Green – You are a balanced, thoughtful person who looks for opportunities to grow mentally and spiritually. You enjoy are a very intellectual, artistic person who loves a challenge. You also enjoy being outdoors and love animals.
Blue – You are cool as a cucumber and love to relax. Blue evokes a feeling of serenity and integrity, and you could not be happier with your color selection. You are kind, smart, and a loyal friend.
Purple – Get on your thinking cap, because this color really makes shows your creative side! You love using your imagination and seek out different solutions to the challenges and difficulties you face every day.
Pink – Pink is a romantic color and shows that you have a caring, happy personality. You love to have fun and laugh a lot with your friends.
If you are an adult and do not wish to showcase your personality in color bands, there is no need to worry! We have plenty of subtle colors for you to choose from, too! If all else, fails you can also opt for Invisalign!

3 Reasons To Get Braces in 2013
With that in mind, I want to give you 3 reasons why you should seriously consider looking into getting orthodontic treatment for the upcoming year.
Braces help correct an underbite or an overbite - One of the main reasons people get braces is to help correct underbite or overbite. An underbite is a situation in which the lower jaw juts out a bit too far causing the bottom teeth to extend out past the upper teeth. Conversely, overbite occurs when the upper jaw pushes the upper teeth too far forward. These two conditions can cause undue stress on the jaw and the teeth, and lead to permanent damage. Braces can help correct both of these situations and potentially save you lots of grief in the future.
Prevent tooth decay - This one might not be very obvious at first glance. Having crooked teeth can make brushing and flossing rather complicated. Plaque builds up in the spaces between teeth, and if the teeth are too close together, or resting at awkward angles with one another, that buildup can easily grow and get out of hand, causing cavities, tooth decay, and many other oral health problems. With straight teeth, flossing is much easier and much more effective at removing plaque.
Better Self-Esteem - Having a nice straight smile will definitely lend itself toward giving you higher self-esteem. No more worrying about awkward half-smiles in pictures! Plus, you will not feel the need to hide your teeth in photos!
So there you have it. If you have been considering getting braces or Invisalign for your teeth or your children’s teeth, call us at (618) 288-0600 in Glen Carbon or at (618) 622-3377 and set up an appointment. You will be glad you did!

Keep Your Teeth From Getting Scary This Halloween!

It's National Orthodontic Health Month - Celebrate Having and Maintaining a Healthy, Happy Smile!
With the beautiful month of October comes wonderful fall weather, apple cider, pumpkin patches, lots of Halloween fun, and, of course, lots of Halloween candy and sweets. But did you know that October is also National Orthodontic Health Month?
Every year the American Association of Orthodontists focuses on promoting good oral hygiene and taking the time to recognize the outstanding work of orthodontists around the country. It is a time to remind people not only how important it is to have a healthy smile, but also to keep in mind how to care for braces, retainers, and any other orthodontic appliances they may have.
When it comes to treating yourself to sweets, no one is more enthusiastic than Dr. Jeff! After all, that is why we have our very own Otis Spunkmeyer cookie-making machine in our office. We would like to remind you, though, that not every sweet treat, snack, and piece of candy is ideal for consumption. Be wary of anything crunchy such as tortilla chips, nuts, or popcorn, as these can potentially cause damage to your braces. The same goes for sticky candies such as caramels, licorice, and taffy.
We hope you all will have a safe and fun October and Halloween, but if you find yourself suffering from fright of a more orthodontic nature, feel free to call us at (618) 288-0600 if you are in the Glen Carbon area or (618) 622-3377 if you are in the Swansea area. We are always ready to help if you have any orthodontic emergencies!

When Should Your Child See an Orthodontist?

Ahh, braces. They were the bane of our existence in junior high and high school. Maybe we were reluctant to smile, or our classmates poked fun of us and called us “metal mouth,” and we had to be constantly vigilant of what goes in our mouth and to clean our teeth so thoroughly after every meal. But when they came off – oh, sweet freedom!
Perhaps you are now at that time in your life in which your children, who have been “blessed” with your teeth, may be ready to visit the orthodontist to talk about braces and other orthodontic care. But how can you know for sure if your child needs braces? And how early is “too early?”
It's best for the orthodontist to see children by age 8 to advise if orthodontic treatment is required. Permanent teeth begin to erupt and emerge from the gums, which is also the best time to pinpoint any dental issues such as crossbites, crowding, and other problems. It’s always better to see someone at a young age to find that no treatment is needed at the time than to try to fix the problems of someone who should’ve been seen at an earlier age.
Does age 8 seem a bit young to you? Are you asking yourself, “Well, I got braces when I was in my preadolescent years, so why does my child have to go so much earlier than I did?”
There are quite a few big advantages to being screened at an early age and (potentially) receiving orthodontic treatment. For one thing, early orthodontic treatment corrects problems that would otherwise worsen in the adult years. The corrections can also be done more easily at an early age since the bones are still growing.
Braces, which actually harken back to ancient times (yes, that’s right – some unearthed mummies had wires wrapped around their teeth to give them a prettier and more efficient smile!), are put in place to slowly straighten the teeth in one’s mouth. Braces put steady pressure on the teeth and help them stay in place for a certain amount of time.
So how do you know if your child is in need of braces? Naturally, we’ll screen your child to see if he or she needs treatment right now or in the near future, but you can also keep a lookout for these other signs:
*your child lost baby teeth early or late.
*your child’s teeth don’t meet at all.
*your child has trouble chewing or biting.
*your child’s upper front teeth protrudes and is more than 25% past the bottom teeth.
*your child sucks on his or her fingers beyond age five or six
*your child’s teeth are otherwise poorly positioned.
Remember, the goal of all orthodontic treatment is to give the person a good bite; that is, we want to give them straight teeth that mesh well together. With straight teeth, one can chew, bite, and talk much more easily, and the person’s dental health and overall health (and definitely self-esteem) is enhanced.
If you think you’re ready to visit an orthodontist for your child, then it’s time to stop by Mastroianni Orthodontics! We love to give people amazing smiles that they’ll have for the rest of their lives! Visit our website at www.amazingsmiles.com or call 618-288-0600 to make an appointment today!

Help Your Children Love Their Mouths More For National Children's Dental Health Month!

It’s February, and you know what that means! Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and stores everywhere are bursting with red, white, and pink stuffed animals, flowers, and sweets.
Know what ELSE is red, white, and pink? The inside of your mouth! February is National Children’s Dental Month, and what better time than this month is there to teach your children about their teeth and the importance of taking good care of them? The American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month each February to help in raising awareness about the importance of oral health, and their message has reached millions of people across America.
When it comes to oral care, developing good, healthy habits at an early age helps children get in the routine of taking care of their teeth and gums not only through their childhood but also for the rest of their lives.
Here are some tips to help you teach your youngsters how to care for their mouths and ensure that they have healthy teeth and gums for the rest of their lives:
Educate Your Children on Oral Health – Explain to your children why taking care of their teeth and gums is so important. Tell them that if they take good care of their teeth throughout their lives, their teeth will then help take good care of them in return by helping them speak clearly and chew the right foods so they grow up to be healthy and strong. Explain to them the concepts of plaque, gingivitis, cavities and unhealthy gums and why they’re detrimental to their teeth.
Brush At Least Twice a Day – It’s important to properly maintain teeth, and this is essential to teach to your children right away. Make sure they know that they should brush their teeth at least twice a day – after they eat breakfast and before bedtime. If they’re able, tell them it’s good to brush their teeth after lunch or after having a sweet snack. Make sure also that they know why it’s so important to brush their teeth, too, as brushing their teeth frequently and properly will obliterate deadly plaque.
Brush ALL of Your Teeth – Children may have the tendency to brush only their front teeth because they’re easier to reach. Make sure they spend some time on the teeth in the back, too. If you’d like, ask us to show them the best way to brush their teeth efficiently and without damaging their gums.
Remember – It’s Not a Race! Be sure that your children spend some time on their teeth. Two or three minutes is a good time to spend on brushing. If they’re having trouble keeping track of their time, you can play one of their favorite songs to help them pass the time and also get a good idea on how long they should brush.
Get the Right Toothbrush For the Job – Toothbrushes with soft bristles are sure to do the job so that gums aren’t damaged when teeth are brushed. Remember to change out toothbrushes every 3 months. You can help your child figure out when the time has come to switch brushes by purchasing the toothbrushes that have the fading color on the sides of the bristles.
Eat Healthily- Sometimes it’s just not enough to brush your teeth. Sugar and candy can wreak havoc on teeth and begin to form cavities because bacteria go crazy when sugary residue resides on teeth. Be sure your children eat sweets and drink soda in moderation and ALWAYS brush their teeth after consuming sugary treats and beverages. Better yet, make sure they eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink water instead of soda.
Practice Healthy Habits – Brushing teeth is only one way to care for teeth, not the catch-all. Flossing teeth is extremely important in keeping teeth healthy and happy as it helps get rid of the food that’s hidden in places no toothbrush can reach. Your child might think it feels weird to floss the first few times they try it, but soon enough, they’ll get the hang of it.
Visit Us Twice a Year – And of course, visit us and your dentist twice a year to make sure teeth are healthy and are growing in correctly.
Are you ready to visit us? Call us at Mastroianni Orthodontics at (618) 205-6133 or visit www.amazingsmiles.com to make an appointment. You don’t have to have a referral to see Dr. Mastroianni, and we also take all types of insurances.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month
One in four parents says their child has had an injury during an organized sport resulting in a trip to the emergency room, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO. That why Dr. Mastroianni & team thought February—also known as National Children’s Dental Health Month—would be great time to remind our patients to be mindful of their braces and teeth while playing sports. Here are a few tips to stay safe on the field this spring, courtesy of the AAO:1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator
We hope that helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact us! Stay safe and have fun!

Cold and Flu Season is Here - Replace Your Toothbrush!
Fall is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush! Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:
• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth and braces if used too long!
We hope these tips help! Feel free to call us at Mastroianni Orthodontics if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook.
