Help Your Children Love Their Mouths More For National Children's Dental Health Month!

It’s February, and you know what that means! Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and stores everywhere are bursting with red, white, and pink stuffed animals, flowers, and sweets.

Know what ELSE is red, white, and pink? The inside of your mouth! February is National Children’s Dental Month, and what better time than this month is there to teach your children about their teeth and the importance of taking good care of them? The American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month each February to help in raising awareness about the importance of oral health, and their message has reached millions of people across America.

When it comes to oral care, developing good, healthy habits at an early age helps children get in the routine of taking care of their teeth and gums not only through their childhood but also for the rest of their lives.

Here are some tips to help you teach your youngsters how to care for their mouths and ensure that they have healthy teeth and gums for the rest of their lives:

Educate Your Children on Oral Health – Explain to your children why taking care of their teeth and gums is so important. Tell them that if they take good care of their teeth throughout their lives, their teeth will then help take good care of them in return by helping them speak clearly and chew the right foods so they grow up to be healthy and strong. Explain to them the concepts of plaque, gingivitis, cavities and unhealthy gums and why they’re detrimental to their teeth.

Brush At Least Twice a Day – It’s important to properly maintain teeth, and this is essential to teach to your children right away. Make sure they know that they should brush their teeth at least twice a day – after they eat breakfast and before bedtime. If they’re able, tell them it’s good to brush their teeth after lunch or after having a sweet snack. Make sure also that they know why it’s so important to brush their teeth, too, as brushing their teeth frequently and properly will obliterate deadly plaque.

Brush ALL of Your Teeth – Children may have the tendency to brush only their front teeth because they’re easier to reach. Make sure they spend some time on the teeth in the back, too. If you’d like, ask us to show them the best way to brush their teeth efficiently and without damaging their gums.

Remember – It’s Not a Race! Be sure that your children spend some time on their teeth. Two or three minutes is a good time to spend on brushing. If they’re having trouble keeping track of their time, you can play one of their favorite songs to help them pass the time and also get a good idea on how long they should brush.

Get the Right Toothbrush For the Job – Toothbrushes with soft bristles are sure to do the job so that gums aren’t damaged when teeth are brushed. Remember to change out toothbrushes every 3 months. You can help your child figure out when the time has come to switch brushes by purchasing the toothbrushes that have the fading color on the sides of the bristles.

Eat Healthily- Sometimes it’s just not enough to brush your teeth. Sugar and candy can wreak havoc on teeth and begin to form cavities because bacteria go crazy when sugary residue resides on teeth. Be sure your children eat sweets and drink soda in moderation and ALWAYS brush their teeth after consuming sugary treats and beverages. Better yet, make sure they eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink water instead of soda.

Practice Healthy Habits – Brushing teeth is only one way to care for teeth, not the catch-all. Flossing teeth is extremely important in keeping teeth healthy and happy as it helps get rid of the food that’s hidden in places no toothbrush can reach. Your child might think it feels weird to floss the first few times they try it, but soon enough, they’ll get the hang of it.

Foods to Avoid During Orthodontic Treatment

While there are many foods you can eat while in braces, there are certain types that our team at Mastroianni Orthodontics would like you to avoid during the course of your treatment. Some of these foods can bend the wires or even break the brackets on your braces. Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables such as carrots and celery. You’ll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces. A few examples of foods to avoid include:

• Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
• Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
• Sticky foods: caramels, gum
• Hard foods: nuts, candy
• Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots

Additionally, chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces, which can cause delay in treatment.

Don’t Forget Your Dental Checkups!

While you’re in orthodontic treatment, proper oral hygiene is critical. Braces and orthodontic appliances can be more challenging to brush and floss around, but an effective daily routine will help ensure the best possible results when your braces come off! While we can help you learn the best methods for oral hygiene with braces, don’t forget that it’s also important to visit your regular dentist every 3-4 months while in treatment, and every 6 months without braces (or as recommended). Because your dental health is important to us, we'd like to remind you to keep up to date with your dental exams and cleanings.

Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, as your dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, Detect cavities and early signs of decay, and treat other oral health problems early.

Oral exams usually involve checking the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been in to your dentist recently, schedule an appointment right away. Additionally, if you have any questions, feel free to ask us!

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month

One in four parents says their child has had an injury during an organized sport resulting in a trip to the emergency room, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO. That why Dr. Mastroianni & team thought February—also known as National Children’s Dental Health Month—would be great time to remind our patients to be mindful of their braces and teeth while playing sports. Here are a few tips to stay safe on the field this spring, courtesy of the AAO:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

Smile, and you might just live longer!

Folks with big smiles may actually live longer than those who don’t, according to a March 2010 study at Michigan’s Wayne State University. We have known for quite some time that positive emotion has been linked to both physical and mental health, but researchers at the university did something quite interesting: they looked at photos of 230 ball-players who began their careers in baseball prior to 1950 and studied their smile intensity (ranging from big smile, no smile or partial smile). The players' smile ratings were compared with data from deaths that occurred from 2006 through 2009. The researchers then took into account other factors that impact life longevity, including body mass index, career length and even college attendance.

The results? Researchers found that players who weren't smiling in the photos lived to the average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. Those with big smiles, however, lived on average to be 79.9 years old.

Cold and Flu Season is Here - Replace Your Toothbrush!

Fall is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth and braces if used too long!

Halloween Treats and Braces

Can you believe Halloween is almost upon us? While we're sure you are busy putting the finishing touches on your costume, carving pumpkins and decorating, we wanted to take a moment to remind you all to be kind to your braces this Halloween season.
Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through orthodontic treatment, and these treats may cause damage that could prolong your treatment time. The AAO recommends patients avoid the following Halloween treats, or recipes with these ingredients:

• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Taco chips
• Ice

If you happen to damage your braces, please give our staff a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved over the phone. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some wax until the you can come into our office.

October Marks the National Orthodontic Health Month!

October symbolizes the transition into the Fall season and of course, Halloween! For our team at Mastroianni Orthodontics, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), and orthodontic patients around the country, October also marks the National Orthodontic Health Month. This month is a great time to remind patients of the importance of strong oral hygiene and a braces-friendly diet, especially since many of the sticky and sweet Halloween treats can be harmful to braces and other orthodontic appliances.

Candy remains a huge part of Halloween for tens of millions of American kids each year. The National Confectioners Association says 93 percent of children in the United States go trick-or-treating, and estimates candy sales will be higher this year than ever. Candy is not all bad in moderation, but can lead to big problems in excess! It can lead to tooth decay, broken or chipped teeth, and delayed orthodontic treatment time due to broken or loose appliances and braces. Each month, a new challenge will be issued on the Make Me Smile Challenge web site. It is up to you to record a video response to the challenge, and upload it on the site. Videos can only be 30 seconds long, but you can enter as many times as you wish!

Should kids get braces at a younger age?

Decades ago, braces were considered to be best used on patients in their mid-teens. But these days, kids as young as seven are beginning their orthodontic treatment based on the recommendations by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).
So how do you know when to have your child screened for orthodontic problems? Experts say it really depends on the specific needs of the patient. Some children who get braces at an early age will reap a great benefit from doing so if they have developing orthodontic issues that can be better treated while the patient has both baby and permanent teeth. Just know that Dr. Mastroianni only starts treatments when they are absolutely necessary and tries to limit early treatment whenever possible as there are only about 5 or 6 conditions he feels are worth correcting at that age.

Most orthodontic treatment begins between ages 9 and 14, and the folks at AAO estimate most orthodontic treatment lasts from one to three years, with two years being the average. It’s important, however, that children be screened no later than age 8 for our team to assess what the best age for treatment is.

Regular checkups are essential in maintaining good oral health

Are you brushing and flossing daily properly during your orthodontic treatment? If yes, that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every 3-6 months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting our office, of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, especially during orthodontic treatment.

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, please call your dentists soon to schedule.

Are there teeth grinders in your house?

Grind, grind, grind. If you live with a teeth grinder, you may be familiar with this unpleasant sound, especially recently. A recent study published in the journal Head & Face Medicine suggests that people—adults and kids—faced with stress tend to cope by grinding their teeth. In addition, the Chicago Dental Society suggests that since the recession began in 2007, teeth grinding, or bruxism, has been on the rise.

The Chicago Dental Society surveyed more than 250 members about the connection between stress and oral health. Nearly 75 percent of dentists said their patients reported increased stress over the past year, largely due to the economic recession. During stressful times, teeth grinding can be a nuisance that causes headaches and sleep problems, but it also can cause lasting problems for your teeth and gums, including chipped teeth, worn enamel, chronic pain, or even TMJ, a painful jaw disorder.

The first step of recovering from teeth grinding is noticing the problem. Symptoms of teeth grinding include:

• Sensitivity in the teeth
• Tightness or pain in the jaw
• Dull headaches, earaches, or facial pain
• Chipped, worn down, or loose teeth

An important thing to remember is that people frequently grind their teeth in response to stress, and taking measures to reduce or eliminate stress can help solve the problem. If the teeth-grinder in your house can’t stop, schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Dr. Mastroianni and our team can help determine the cause of the problem.

Orthodontics - All the cool kids do it!

Braces today are cool and—many would say—even fun! These were among the findings of a 2010 nationwide survey of moms whose children are going through or have had orthodontic treatment. New technologies such as In-Ovation, advanced computer software, color options, and even popular celebrities—Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Danny Glover, Serena Williams—sporting stylish braces are making orthodontic treatment more comfortable, fashionable and exciting for today’s teens.

The study, conducted on behalf of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists for February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, found 86 percent of moms reporting that braces are better today than when they were children. Sixty-nine percent of moms also said wearing braces makes their children feel cool, and 81 percent reported their children’s experience with orthodontic treatment as either positive or extremely positive.

Different color options and the ability to change colors at each visit, for example, provide exciting ways for young patients to customize appearances. Keeping your teeth clean is more important than ever when you have braces. Food bits have more spots than usual to hide in your mouth, so you must be diligent in order to avoid bad breath, swollen gums, discolored teeth and cavities. If you remove plaque regularly during treatment, you'll experience better results and shorter treatment time. Keep plaque at bay with these top ten tips, from Mastroianni Orthodontics:

1. One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.

2. It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.

3. The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.

4. Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.

5. Like a Boy Scout, always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.

6. Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.

7. Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with the fluoride toothpaste we prescribed you, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.

8. Pointy brushes reach tiny places. Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.

9. Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.

10. Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide. There are so many questions about orthodontics that people never ask, so we took some time to explain the most common concerns.

At what age should orthodontic treatment occur?

Orthodontic treatment can be started at almost any age, but many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed. Early treatment may mean that a patient can avoid more serious treatment recommendations later on. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child first visit an orthodontist by age seven if a problem is detected by parents, the family dentist, or the child's physician, but our philosophy is that every patient should be screened no later age 9 just to be certain no orthodontic problems are present.

What is Phase I and Phase II treatment?

Phase I, or early interceptive treatment, is limited orthodontic treatment (i.e. expander, headgear, space maintainer, or partial braces) before all of the permanent teeth have erupted. Such treatment can occur between the ages of seven and ten. This treatment is sometimes recommended to make more space for developing teeth, correction of crossbites, overbites, underbites, or harmful oral habits. Phase II treatment is also called comprehensive treatment, because it involves full braces when all of the permanent teeth have erupted, usually between the ages of eleven and thirteen.

Would an adult patient benefit from orthodontics?

Absolutely!! Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. Everyone wants a beautiful and healthy smile. Between 30-40% of our patients are adults.

How does orthodontic treatment work?

Braces use steady gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions. The brackets that are placed on your teeth and the arch wire that connects them are the main components. When the arch wire is placed into the brackets, it tries to return to its original shape. As it does so, it applies pressure to move your teeth to their new, more ideal positions. Additionally, we use Invisalign to align teeth in an esthetic way and our patients love the comfort and ease of removal!

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment times vary on a case-by-case basis, but the average time is from one to two years. Actual treatment time can be affected by rate of growth and severity of the correction necessary. Treatment length is also dependent upon patient compliance. Maintaining good oral hygiene and keeping regular appointments are important in keeping your treatment time on schedule.

Do braces hurt?

The placement of bands and brackets on your teeth does not hurt. Once your braces are placed and connected with the arch wires, you may feel some soreness of your teeth for one to four days. Your lips and cheeks may need one to two weeks to get used to the braces on your teeth.

Will braces interfere with playing sports?

No. It is recommended, however, that patients protect their smiles by wearing a mouth guard when participating in any sporting activity. Mouth guards are inexpensive, comfortable, and come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments?

There may be an initial period of adjustment, but most people are able to overcome it within a week. In addition, brace covers or wax can be provided to prevent discomfort.

Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?

Yes, you should continue to see your general dentist every six months for cleaning and dental checkups. We frequently recommend having the teeth cleaned every 3 months during orthodontic care to make sure the teeth are very clean and that any cavities are spotted as early as possible.

According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year. By simply wearing a properly fitted mouth guard or other form of protection, you can greatly reduce your chances of traumatic facial injuries. This is even more important while you are in orthodontic treatment, when patients risk damaging their appliances by not wearing the proper mouth protection.

Sports and Orthodontics

With all this crazy weather we have been having, you wouldn't believe that it’s almost springtime! The spring and summer months, however, bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of kids damaging their precious mouths and pearly whites. If you play sports, it's important that you consult Dr. Mastroianni for special precautions. A protective mouth guard is advised for playing spring sports such as baseball and soccer. Be sure to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth as these will resist any tooth movements we are trying to achieve.

In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, please schedule an appointment with us. And don’t forget to ask us— we will provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment.

Age 7 is the magic number for an orthodontic check-up

Many parents assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to see us, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started sooner. Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct while the jaw is still growing. Consequently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven.

Ok, so what’s so great about age seven, you ask? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for Dr. Mastroianni to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and are detrimental to good oral hygiene. Yes, it is, and that’s part of what makes it work. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing we do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, we look at the current positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next we use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. And since the aligners are virtually invisible, nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Meet Dr. Mastroianni

Dr. Mastroianni found his 'calling' for orthodontics at an early age. Born in Granite City, Illinois in 1971, Dr. Jeff was inspired by his uncle who was a pediatric dentist. He took note of the amazing relationships his uncle seemed to develop with his patients and felt dentistry could be the career for him. During his youth, he enjoyed playing soccer, baseball, and wrestling. Jeff was on the high school soccer and wrestling teams and graduated in 1989 from Hunterdon Central High School in New Jersey.

After graduation, he attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, and majored in biology.Once undergraduate studies were completed, he attended Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in Alton, Illinois. Here Dr. Jeff learned all the basic skills in dentistry and even a bit of orthodontics! He was named Class President in both his sophomore and junior years, and was Student Body President during his senior year. In addition to these positions, he held various committee positions as well as a spot on the prestigious Dean’s Advisory Board. After graduating from SIU Dental School with honors (Cum Laude) in 1998, Dr. Mastroianni accepted a position at Saint Louis University to study Orthodontics. After two and a half years of study, he finished the program and earned a masters degree.

Dr. Jeff is known for his zany sense of humor as well as the caring way he treats each and every person he meets. He is thankful for all the genuine compliments he and his staff receive every day and the entire team uses those kind words as motivation to reach higher levels of service and care for our patients. He is also very involved in the local community, donating orthodontic treatment to schools and other organizations to help raise money for good causes.

Dr. Jeff has been married to his lovely wife Julie for 11 years, and they have 2 daughters, Anna (8) and Nikki (5). Dr. Jeff has been active in local civic organizations, as well as the local Dental Society. In his spare time he likes to spend time with family, golf, read, snow ski, travel, and watch almost any type of sporting event.
